PRERNA has been working in collaboration with Delhi Government through Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB) to manage shelters across Delhi. PRERNA has been working to secure safe shelters to the homeless people of Delhi where the homeless live peacefully with dignity. Round the year, it runs permanent shelters. During winter, it also runs additional temporary shelters in porta cabin, buildings or tents. These shelters are provided by government. Prerna has shown the model of multiple uses of government buildings by running shelters in school, buildings and community centers Currently, Prena runs 18 shelters (24×7)  have the capacity for over 4000 homeless people to stay. Within the shelters, Prerna offers the homeless a clean place and a blanket to sleep, the use of electricity, fresh drinking water, use of a bath room, water coolers during summer, first aid and a weekly doctor’s team visit with free medicines, system for admission to hospitals in case of emergency.

Prerna has been engaged with managing Night shelter home since 2014, allotted by DUSIB. PRERNA runs a permanent night shelter in at AIIMS hospital, New Delhi, for homeless people and patients coming from different state for the treatment. The shelter is conveniently located and easily accessible for the homeless people and patients.

FACILITIES PROVIDED BY PRERNA

Within the shelter, PRERNA provides the facilities like Healthcare & Food, Entertainment, Yoga & Counseling, Restoration and other essentials like blankets/ quilts, mattresses, lockers and items needed for sanitation & hygiene. The night shelter is managed by 2 caregivers, and a cleaner. Through the night shelter, Prerna provides protection and opportunities for development to almost 300 homeless people including patient on a daily basis. Prerna  offers to the homeless a clean place and a blanket to sleep, the use of electricity, fresh drinking water, the use of a bath room, water coolers during summer, first aid and a weekly doctor’s team visit with free medicines, assisting equipment like wheel chair and stretchers.

Prerna has been operating a permanent shelter collaborating with Government, where the half contribution of the expenses was delivered by the government so far. Under such schemes, government has stopped by granting for shelter home. Homeless people need shelter for protection against natural threats, such as extreme weather and dangerous creatures, and even as security against other human beings. Significantly, patients stay at the shelter and due to poor financial condition; those patients are unable to afford the rent expenses for room. The need to offer a coordinated and functioning shelter throughout seasons became mandatory. Hence, Prerna revolves to operate the shelter home at voluntarily bases. Under these Shelters, Prerna provides secure accommodation to each and every one who is at risk of or has been subjected to violence. Approximately 300 people stay on daily basis. Prerna has been contributing its efforts to avail the services of food, drinking water, entertainment, cleanliness and health care facilities.
